The Pathology Network (TPN) scoping study

The Project

The Pathology Network (TPN) is an African health-tech company transforming access to specialist diagnostic services across the continent. Founded in Kenya in 2017, TPN was created to address the critical shortage and uneven distribution of pathologists by connecting hospitals, laboratories, and specialists through a digital diagnostic network.

Today, TPN’s platform enables clinicians to access specialised tests—including cancer diagnostics, histopathology, cytology, immunohistochemistry, and HPV testing—through a coordinated network of laboratories and pathologists across East Africa and beyond. By digitising the diagnostic journey, TPN helps reduce delays, improves quality and transparency, and ensures patients can access reliable diagnoses regardless of their location.

TPN’s mission is simple: to enable equal access to quality diagnosis for all. Rather than building new laboratories, the organisation uses technology and smart coordination to unlock the capacity of existing diagnostic services, making them more efficient, affordable, and accessible. Its network now includes partner laboratories, pathologists, universities, logistics providers, and healthcare organisations working together to strengthen diagnostic systems and improve patient outcomes.

LAMP supported TPN to undertake an initial assessment and document the wider benefits of its model. The study explored how TPN contributes to earlier diagnosis, improved access to cancer screening and testing, more efficient use of specialist pathology resources, and stronger health systems. The findings informed the development of a research protocol for a larger academic study which is now underway. This work aims to strengthen the evidence base for digital health innovation in resource-constrained settings and inform continued growth of digital pathology across Africa.
